Edakkal Caves are a popular tourist attraction located in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India. These are natural caves formed by large boulders resting on top of one another. The caves are situated on the Ambukuthi Hills, about 25 km from the town of Kalpetta.
The Edakkal Caves are famous
for their prehistoric rock art, dating back to the Neolithic Age (6000 BCE). The cave walls are covered with engravings and paintings, depicting humans, animals, weapons, and other objects of daily life. These engravings provide valuable insights into the lifestyle, beliefs, and culture of the people who lived in this region thousands of years ago.
Visitors need to undertake a 1.5 km trek uphill to reach the caves. The trek is moderately difficult and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Once at the caves, visitors can explore the interiors and see the rock art up close.
The Edakkal Caves are a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India and are open to visitors throughout the year, except on Mondays. The best time to visit is between October and May, when the weather is pleasant and the trek is easier. Visitors can hire guides at the site to learn more about the history and significance of the caves.
